Hey, it's Cindy ๐ฑ ViewRank is a free Chrome extension that brings the outlier Reels to the top. Here is how to set it up and read the board.
btw the waitlist for AI System Club is now open! If you're keen on using AI to automate your content, video editing, job search, business or build AI agents, feel free to sign up (only if you want to hehe). Ps. the waitlist gets first dibs:)
๐ก The whole idea. Stop guessing what to post. Let the data hand you the hooks and formats that already worked in your niche, then rebuild them in your voice with your examples. You are modelling proven structure, not copying content.
the mindset
Why outlier score beats raw views
Raw views lie. A reel with 2M views from an account with 5M followers is a quiet underperformer. A reel with 180k views from a 12k-follower account is a rocket, the algorithm pushed it way past the creator's own audience. That second one is the idea worth studying, and sorting by views alone hides it.
An outlier score fixes this. It divides a video's views by that account's own baseline (its median recent views), so it measures how far a post broke out relative to what's normal for them. As a rough read: around 10x the baseline is a strong outlier, and 100x is a monster. Score, not view count, is what tells you an idea has real pull independent of follower size.
๐ฏ Where to point it. Run this on 5 to 10 creators in your exact niche, plus 2 or 3 slightly adjacent ones. Adjacent niches are where fresh formats leak in before everyone in your lane copies them.
the setup
Set up ViewRank in about 4 minutes
๐งฉ Install the extension. Open the ViewRank Chrome Web Store page and click Add to Chrome. It's free, and it processes the profile data locally in your browser unless you choose to send videos to its paid workspace.
๐ Pin it to your toolbar. Click the puzzle-piece Extensions icon at the top right of Chrome, then the pin next to ViewRank. Now it's one click from any page instead of buried in a menu.
๐ฌ Open a creator's Reels tab. Go to any public Instagram profile and click the Reels tab specifically (the URL ends in /reels/). ViewRank reads the grid on that tab, so start it there, not on the main profile.
๐ฑ๏ธ Click the ViewRank icon. Pick how many reels to load (50 to 500, or All) and let it scroll the profile to pull the numbers. Bigger accounts take longer, so start with 200 to keep it quick.
๐ Sort by outlier score. In the panel, switch the sort to Outliers. The account's biggest breakout reels jump to the top. From there you can also star favourites, add tags and notes, and export the list to a sheet.
๐ก Same trick works on TikTok. ViewRank now supports TikTok profiles too, so you can pull outliers from a creator's TikTok grid the same way and spot formats before they cross over to Reels.
what to look for
Read the board like a strategist
Once the outliers are sorted, don't just watch them. Reverse-engineer them. For each top reel, break down these four layers, because the score tells you it worked but not why.
๐ช The hook The first 2 seconds. What is the exact line and visual that stops the scroll? Write it down word for word. Most of the outlier is decided here.
๐งฑ The structure How is the middle built? Is it a list, a story, a single demo, a myth-then-truth? Map the beats in order so you can reuse the skeleton.
๐ฏ The angle What tension or promise is it playing on? The same topic with a sharper angle is often the whole reason one reel beat another on the same profile.
๐ฆ The packaging The on-screen cover text, the caption, the CTA. This is the free half of the reel most people skip. Screenshot the ones that made you tap.
๐ฏ Look for patterns, not one-offs. If a creator has three outliers and all three open with a bold claim then immediately show proof, that's a repeatable format for your niche, not a fluke. Formats that repeat are the ones worth stealing the structure of.
decode it
Turn a winner into a brief with Claude
Paste a top outlier's hook, caption, and your notes on its structure into Claude and have it name the pattern for you. Naming the mechanism is what makes it reusable across a hundred future videos instead of just this one.
decode the outlier
You are a short-form content strategist. Below is a reel that
massively outperformed the creator's baseline.
Hook (first line): [paste the exact opening line]
Caption: [paste the caption]
Structure I noticed: [paste your beat-by-beat notes]
Topic: [one line on what it's about]
Do three things:
1. Name the hook pattern in 3 to 5 words (e.g. "contrarian
claim + instant proof") so I can reuse it.
2. Map the beat structure as a reusable skeleton with blanks
I can fill in for a different topic.
3. Tell me the one psychological reason this likely broke out
past the creator's own audience.
make it yours
Model it, never copy it
This is the line that keeps you original and keeps you out of trouble. You take the skeleton Claude pulled out and rebuild it with your topic, your examples, and your voice. Same proven structure, completely different content.
rebuild it in your voice
Here's a proven reel skeleton:
[paste the skeleton Claude gave you]
My niche: [e.g. AI tools for non-technical marketers]
My voice: warm, plain-spoken, no hype, I show the actual build
My topic for this one: [your specific topic]
Write me 3 different reel scripts that use this exact structure
but with my topic and voice. For each: give the hook line, the
beats, and one line of on-screen cover text. Do not reuse the
original creator's words, examples, or phrasing anywhere.
๐ซ Copying the words is where it goes wrong. Reusing someone's hook line, script, or examples verbatim reads as a knock-off and can get your reel suppressed or your account reported. Take the format, bring your own substance. The structure is fair game, the content has to be yours.
other free tools
ViewRank alternatives worth knowing
ViewRank is my default, but these do the same job with different strengths. All have free versions, so try a couple and keep the one that fits how you browse.
๐ Outliers Instagram only, free. Filters a Reels tab down to just the posts doing 5x or more views relative to the account's followers, with a side panel, saved library, and CSV export. Great when you only want the true breakouts and nothing else. Get it
๐ท๏ธ Handler Free, and it works differently: it overlays an outlier score on every post as you normally browse Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, no separate panel to open. Best if you'd rather see scores live while scrolling than sort a whole profile at once. Get it
๐ ClipRanker Free version available. Analyses any public profile across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, sorts by views, likes, comments, or engagement rate, filters by content type, and flags outliers against the creator's last 20 posts. Strong if you work across all three platforms. Get it
โญ Why I stay on ViewRank It covers Instagram and TikTok, sorts by true outlier score, and lets me star, tag, note, and export the winners into a swipe file. That last part is what turns a browsing session into an actual idea bank.
the honest bit
Keep it real
๐ฏ Sort, then film. The extension finds ideas fast, which means it's easy to sit and sort for an hour instead of making anything. Pull 3 outliers, build 3 briefs, film. The tool is the input, your reel is the output.
๐ก Your unfair advantage. Everyone can see the same outliers now. The edge isn't finding them, it's how well you translate a proven format into your own angle and voice. That taste is the part no extension can copy.
