The desire hook method: write a first line so good it's basically unskippable
Hey, it's Cindy ๐ฑ This guide gives you the two rules, five plug-and-play templates you can steal today, and a Claude prompt that writes ten desire hooks for your exact niche.

the core idea
Info hooks pull viewers, desire hooks pull buyers
An info hook promises information. A desire hook promises a transformation. That one shift changes who leans in. Compare these two openers for the same video:
โ Info hook "Here are the 3 best algorithm hacks for Instagram." Gets views, mostly from low-intent scrollers who collect tips and never act.
โ Desire hook "Here's how to go from 200 to 20,000 followers in the next six weeks." Same topic, but now it's pointed at an outcome, so the person who actually wants that outcome cannot look away.
The desire hook works because you're not selling the content, you're selling the after. And the people who want the after are the people who eventually buy the thing that gets them there.
rule one
Lead with the desired outcome, not the information
Open on the result someone secretly wants, stated specifically. Not "grow your Instagram" but "go from 200 to 20,000 followers in six weeks." Specificity is what makes it believable and makes it bite. Vague outcomes ("get more engagement") feel like every other post. Concrete outcomes ("book 5 sales calls a week from one reel") feel like a promise aimed straight at you.
๐ฏ Name the number and the timeframe. "More followers" is a wish. "20,000 followers in six weeks" is a destination. The more specific the outcome, the more the right person feels like you're talking about their exact goal.
rule two
Tie that outcome to a relatable character
An outcome floating on its own is a claim. An outcome attached to a person is a story, and stories are what make it feel real. The character can be one of three people, and each one does a slightly different job:
๐ The viewer ("you") "Here's how you go from..." Most direct. The viewer is the hero. Best when the outcome is clearly achievable for them.
๐ You (the creator) "Here's how I went from..." Adds proof and vulnerability. Best when you've actually lived the transformation.
๐ง A third party "Here's how Tony went from..." Adds credibility and removes ego. Best when the person is relatable to your audience ("a beginner, just like you").
๐ฎ Their future self "Here's how to become the person who..." Sells an identity, not just a result. Best for aspirational, longer-game outcomes.
๐ก The relatability trick. When you use a third party, make them one rung ahead of your audience, not ten. "Here's how a total beginner did it" lands harder than "here's how a 7-figure agency did it," because the viewer can actually picture themselves in the story.
steal these
5 desire hook templates
Each one is a fill-in-the-blank. Swap in your outcome, your character, and your number. I've put a worked example under each so you can see it land in the AI and content space.
1 ยท the direct transformation (character = the viewer)
Here's how to go from [current state] to [specific dream outcome] in [timeframe].
Example: "Here's how to go from posting into the void to your first 10,000 followers in 90 days, even if nobody's watching right now."
2 ยท the third-party proof (character = a relatable person)
Here's how [name/character] went from [before] to [after] using [a named system or number of steps].
Example: "Here's how a complete beginner went from zero to $3,000 a month with AI, using one free tool and a 4-step system."
3 ยท the "if you want X" cast (character = you the viewer, direct)
If you want [specific outcome], here's the exact [system / playbook / setup] I'd steal.
Example: "If you want to make one reel a day without burning out, here's the exact AI content system I'd steal."
4 ยท the identity outcome (character = their future self)
Here's how to become the [aspirational identity] in your [space], even if [current limiting belief].
Example: "Here's how to become the AI person everyone at your company asks for help, even if you've never written a line of code."
5 ยท the speed + specificity (character named, believable number)
[Character] hit [specific, believable number] in [short timeframe]. Here's the [N]-step system.
Example: "Someone I know booked 12 sales calls in a week from a single reel. Here's the 3-step system behind it."
let claude write ten
The prompt that generates desire hooks for your niche
๐ Paste this into Claude, fill in the two brackets, and it writes ten desire hooks across all five templates so you can pick the strongest one.
๐ค the desire-hook generator
You are a short-form hook writer. Write me 10 "desire hooks" for a video, using the desire hook method. My topic: [what the video teaches]. My audience: [who they are and the specific outcome they secretly want]. The rules of a desire hook: 1) LEAD with a specific desired outcome (a real number + timeframe where possible), not with information. 2) TIE that outcome to a relatable character: the viewer ("you"), me the creator ("I"), a relatable third party one rung ahead of my audience, or their future self. Give me 2 hooks in each of these 5 shapes: the direct transformation, the third-party proof, the "if you want X" cast, the identity outcome, and the speed + specificity. Rules: every outcome must be something I can actually help them achieve (no fake promises), specificity beats hype, keep each hook under 15 words and say it out loud in your head before you write it. After the 10, tell me which single hook is strongest and why.
the honest bit
Two things to keep it real
๐ซ Only promise an outcome you can actually deliver. A desire hook writes a cheque the rest of your video has to cash. If the hook says "20,000 followers in six weeks" and the content doesn't get anywhere near helping with that, you win the click and lose the trust. Pick outcomes that are true to what you teach.
๐ก Specific beats big. A believable, specific number ("$3,000 a month") outperforms a huge vague one ("get rich with AI") almost every time. If a claim sounds too good, the viewer's guard goes up and the lean-in disappears. Real and specific is the sweet spot.
