Life & self ChatGPT

Stop your AI chats from showing up on Google

Hey, it's Cindy ๐ŸŒฑ Quick heads up, not a scare. In mid 2025 people found thousands of ChatGPT conversations sitting in Google results, some with real names, resumes and personal stuff inside. Your private chats were never leaked. What got indexed were chats people had actively hit "share" on, plus a short-lived "make this discoverable" toggle. OpenAI has since pulled that toggle, but old share links can still be live and findable. This guide shows exactly how it happens and the 5 minutes it takes to check yourself and lock it down, in both ChatGPT and Claude.
๐Ÿ’ก The one thing to remember. A normal chat you type into ChatGPT or Claude is private. A chat only becomes a public web page when you press Share and create a link. So this is about two things: never share a sensitive chat, and clean up any share links you made and forgot about.

how it happens

How a private chat ends up on Google ๐Ÿ”Ž

  1. ๐Ÿ”— You press "share" and get a public link. Both tools let you turn a conversation into a link so you can send it to someone. That link is a real, live web page. In ChatGPT it looks like chatgpt.com/share/..., in Claude it looks like claude.ai/share/.... Anyone who has the link can open it, no login needed.
  2. ๐ŸŒ Public pages can get indexed. Google constantly crawls the open web. Once a share page is public and gets linked or discovered, it can end up in search results. In July 2025 ChatGPT briefly added a "make this chat discoverable" checkbox that fast-tracked exactly this, and over 4,500 shared chats showed up in Google before OpenAI removed the feature around 5 August 2025.
  3. ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ People find them with a "site:" search. There is a normal Google trick called dorking: site: tells Google to only show pages from one place. So site:chatgpt.com/share surfaces indexed share pages, and adding a name or phrase narrows it to a person. Nothing was hacked. These were just public pages being searched like any other.
๐ŸŽฏ The takeaway. Nobody can Google your private conversations. They can only find chats that were turned into public share links. That is fully in your control, and this guide is how you take it back.

rule one

Never public-share a sensitive chat ๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿšซ Treat "share" like posting publicly. If a chat has your full name, address, medical stuff, salary, legal questions, client work or anything you would not put on a billboard, do not create a share link for it. A link is "anyone who has it can read it," and links get forwarded, screenshotted and crawled.
โœ… Safe way to send a chat Copy the text you want and paste it straight into a message, email or doc. No public page is ever created, so there is nothing to index.
โœ… Screenshot instead For one answer, screenshot it. A picture in a message is not a crawlable web page.
โš ๏ธ Only share what you'd post If you do share a link, assume it could be seen by anyone, forever. Strip names and personal details from the chat first.
โš ๏ธ Watch team and mobile shares The share button is one tap on mobile and easy to hit by accident. Pause before you confirm it.

clean it up

Turn off and unshare in ChatGPT ๐Ÿงน

  1. ๐Ÿ‘ค Open your settings. Go to chatgpt.com, click your profile picture in the corner, then Settings.
  2. ๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Go to Data controls. In the settings menu, open Data controls.
  3. ๐Ÿ”— Open "Shared links" and hit Manage. This is the full list of every chat you ever turned into a link. Most people are surprised how many are in here.
  4. ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Delete the ones you don't want public. Click delete on any link to kill that public page. There is also a menu to delete all shared links at once if you want a clean slate.
๐Ÿ’ก Good news on the toggle. The old "make this chat discoverable" checkbox has been removed, so new shares are not fed to search engines the way they briefly were. You still want to clear out old links, because the pages stay live until you delete them.

same for claude

Unshare in Claude ๐Ÿงน

  1. ๐Ÿ‘ค Open Settings, then Privacy. On claude.ai, click your profile in the bottom-left corner, open Settings, then Privacy.
  2. ๐Ÿ”— Manage your shared links. Next to Shared links, click Manage to see the log of every chat you made public.
  3. ๐Ÿ”’ Unshare anything sensitive. Hit unshare on any chat to switch that link off. You can also do it inside a chat: open the visibility dropdown and flip it from Public back to Private.
๐Ÿ“ฑ One catch. You can view your shared chats on mobile, but you can only delete or unshare them from a browser on desktop. So do this cleanup on a laptop.

check yourself

The 30-second self-check ๐Ÿ”

Run this search in Google to see if anything of yours is sitting in the index. Paste it in, swap in your own name or a phrase only you would recognise, like an old job title or a project name.

paste into google, swap in your name
site:chatgpt.com/share "Your Full Name"

Then run the same check for Claude and for a couple of unique phrases you know you have typed into a chat:

the other checks to run
site:claude.ai/share "Your Full Name"
site:chatgpt.com/share "my resume"
site:chatgpt.com/share "your company or client name"
๐Ÿ’ก If nothing comes up, you're clear. Empty results mean nothing of yours is indexed. If something does appear, unshare or delete it using the steps above, and it will drop out of Google over time as the page stops existing.
โฑ๏ธ Want it gone from Google faster? After you delete the share link, the cached result can linger for a bit. Use Google's free Remove Outdated Content tool to push the removal through quickly.

the honest bit

What this does and doesn't do ๐Ÿ“Œ

โœ… It protects you going forward Delete your share links and stop sharing sensitive chats, and there is nothing public for anyone to find.
โœ… It's fully in your hands This was never a breach. It is a setting, and you own the setting.
โš ๏ธ It can't unsee a forward If someone already opened or saved a link before you deleted it, that copy is out. Delete early.
โš ๏ธ Other engines exist Bing and DuckDuckGo can index too. Deleting the link removes it from all of them, since the page itself is gone.
