Getting started Claude

Claude starter pack (setup guide)

Hey, it's Cindy 🌱 If you've been scrolling past AI content thinking it isn't for you, this is your 5 minutes: Claude configured, your first prompt ready, one weekly ritual picked.

If you've been scrolling past AI content thinking "this isn't for me," this is your 5 minutes. By the end you'll have Claude configured, your first prompt ready, and one weekly ritual picked. No coding. No tech background needed.

step one

1: Sign up (free works)

Go to claude.ai and sign up with the email you actually check, because Claude will save things about you tied to this account and you want that on your main inbox.

The free plan is genuinely enough to start. You get around 15 to 40 messages every 5 hours, running on the same Sonnet model that powers most paid interactions (source). Upgrade later when you hit the wall, not before.

Download the mobile app (iOS or Android) while you're at it. You'll end up using Claude on your phone more than you think.

2: Your first prompt

Most people's first prompt to Claude is "write me a caption" and they get an okay caption. Try this one instead. Copy-paste it exactly:

🧠 your first prompt
I work as [your job]. My biggest headache at work right now is [the frustrating thing]. Before giving me advice, what questions do you need to ask me so you actually understand my situation?

Watch what happens. Claude asks you questions back. This is the move that makes AI feel like an actual collaborator instead of a vending machine. The better you answer its questions, the better the advice gets.

3: Teach it about you

Type these words into your Claude chat right now: "remember that..." followed by a fact about you.

Examples you can paste:

remember that I work in [industry] as a [role]
remember that I hate bullet points in my emails
remember that I'm based in Melbourne and my work hours are evenings
remember that I write in Australian English

Claude saves these forever. Every chat you open after this already knows who you are, so you never have to re-explain yourself. This feature alone is worth more than most ChatGPT prompt packs floating around online.

Spend 2 minutes dropping 5 to 10 facts about you and what you're working on. Future you will thank present you.

4: Set up one Project

Click "Projects" in your left sidebar. Make one called "Work" (or whatever your main thing is).

Projects are folders where Claude remembers context for a specific part of your life. You can drop in documents, PDFs, a resume, brand guidelines, whatever lives in that world. Every chat inside that project knows all of it automatically, so you stop copy-pasting the same background into every new conversation.

Start with one project. Don't build ten. One project, three documents, one system prompt that says "I am [role] at [company], here's what I'm working on this quarter." Done.

make it stick

5: Pick your weekly ritual

This is where most people lose. They download Claude, try it once, and forget it exists.

Pick one thing you already do every week and commit to using Claude for it this week. Just one:

  1. Monday morning brain-dump your week and ask Claude to sort it into priorities
  2. Before any meeting paste the agenda and ask "what questions should I be ready to answer?"
  3. Friday tell Claude what went well and what flopped, and ask what you should change next week

Do that one ritual for 7 days. After that you'll spot your own use cases naturally, because AI becomes a thing you reach for instead of a thing you forgot about.

You're set up. The people making money with AI aren't using secret prompts. They just opened the thing and used it every day until it clicked.
