Claude in Excel, PowerPoint and Word: the full setup

Hey, it's Cindy ๐ŸŒฑ You commented EXCEL, so here is exactly what dropped, how to install it in five minutes, and the prompts that do real work in each app.
btw the waitlist for AI System Club is now open! If you're keen on using AI to automate your content, video editing, job search, business or build AI agents, feel free to sign up (only if you want to hehe). Ps. the waitlist gets first dibs:)
what actually dropped

The breakdown, with sources

Claude now works inside Microsoft 365 Add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint and Word, generally available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Context carries between the apps, so a conversation can start in a model and end in a deck.
Ten finance agent templates Pitch builder, meeting preparer, earnings reviewer, model builder, market researcher, valuation reviewer, general ledger reconciler, month-end closer, statement auditor and KYC screener (Anthropic announcement).
Eight new data connectors Dun & Bradstreet, Fiscal AI, Financial Modeling Prep, Guidepoint, IBISWorld, SS&C Intralinks, Third Bridge and Verisk, plus a Moody's app carrying credit data on more than 600 million public and private companies.
The signal underneath it JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon shared a stage with Anthropic's CEO and described asking for a markets analysis: "In 20 minutes, it created a huge dashboard, with all the backup, and all the research" (Fortune).

Why this matters even if you never touch a financial model: finance is one of the most conservative, most regulated, most change-resistant corners of white collar work. When that industry moves in publicly, the question stops being whether your industry adopts this and becomes who in your team is fluent when it does. A competitor also launched a finance product for professional analysts around the same time, aimed at hedge funds and wealth managers on a paid tier, which tells you where the whole market is pointing. The part you can act on today is the Claude side, so that is what the rest of this guide covers.

before you install

The honest plan and version gates

๐Ÿ’ก Read the gates first so nothing wastes your afternoon. The add-in is free to install from the Microsoft marketplace, but using it needs a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise Claude account. The free plan does not cover it. It runs on Excel, PowerPoint and Word on the web, on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription (build 16.0.13127.20296 or later for Excel and PowerPoint), and on Mac (Excel and PowerPoint version 16.46 or later, Word version 16.61 or later). It does not run on the 2016 or 2019 perpetual and volume licences, on iPad, or on Android (Excel docs).
install it

Five minutes, one listing

  1. ๐Ÿ›’ Open the marketplace listing. Go to the Claude for Microsoft 365 listing on Microsoft AppSource. One listing covers Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  2. โž• Select "Get it now". That installs the add-in against your Microsoft account. There is no separate download.
  3. ๐Ÿ”‘ Open the app and sign in. Launch Excel, activate the add-in, and sign in with the same Claude account you use on claude.ai. Claude appears in the Home ribbon on Windows, or under Tools, then Add-ins on Mac.
  4. ๐Ÿข Blocked by your IT team? Admins deploy it through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under Settings, Integrated apps, Add-ins, and there is a custom manifest route for organisations that keep the Office Store switched off. Send them the deployment steps rather than filing a vague request.
  5. โš™๏ธ Set your standing instructions. Open Settings in the add-in sidebar and fill the Instructions field with your conventions, for example "format numbers with thousand separators" or "always bold column headers". These apply to every conversation in that app, and Excel, PowerPoint and Word each keep their own set.

excel

What it does in a spreadsheet

This is the one that changes your week. Claude reads the open workbook, answers with cell-level citations you can click, updates values while keeping formula relationships intact, builds or populates models, works across multi-tab workbooks, and handles native operations like sorting, filtering, pivot tables, conditional formatting and data validation dropdowns.

๐Ÿ” audit the sheet you inherited
Walk this workbook end to end and tell me what it actually does before I trust a single number in it.

Map the tabs and how they feed each other, identify which cells are hard-coded inputs versus formulas, and show me the three or four assumptions that drive most of the output. Then list every error, inconsistent formula in a row that should be uniform, broken reference and stale link you can find, with the exact cell reference for each so I can click through. Rank what you found by how badly it would distort the headline number, and tell me plainly which parts of this file you would not rely on.
๐Ÿงฎ flex the assumptions safely
I want to see how sensitive this model is, without breaking the formula relationships.

Change the [assumption, for example "growth rate"] from [current value] to [new value], let every dependent cell recompute, and show me the before and after for the outputs that matter: [name the three outputs, for example "revenue, gross margin and closing cash"]. Then run the same comparison at a pessimistic and an optimistic value of your choosing, and summarise which single assumption moves the result most. Tell me which cells you changed and flag anything you had to overwrite rather than recalculate.
๐Ÿ—๏ธ build the thing you rebuild every month
Build me a reusable [for example "monthly reporting"] template in this workbook, on a new tab, from the raw data on [tab name].

Structure it so the raw export drops into one tab untouched and everything else calculates from it, with clearly labelled input cells at the top and no hard-coded numbers buried inside formulas. Add the summary view I actually present: [describe the rows and columns you need], plus conditional formatting that flags anything more than 10 percent off the prior period. When it is built, walk me through how to refresh it next month in three steps, and tell me which parts will break if the raw export changes shape.
๐Ÿ“Œ Two capability gaps to know. Data tables and anything involving macros or VBA are not supported. If your workbook leans on either, plan around it rather than discovering it mid-task.

powerpoint and word

The deck and the document

In PowerPoint, Claude builds slides using the template already loaded, reading your slide master, layouts, fonts and colours, makes pinpoint edits to single slides without regenerating the deck, and turns bullets into native editable charts and diagrams rather than flat images. In Word, it answers with clickable section citations, edits selected passages while preserving styles and numbering, works in tracked changes so every edit lands as a revision you accept or reject, works through comment threads and replies to them, and summarises what a counterparty changed in a redline.

๐ŸŽž๏ธ deck from the numbers, in your template
Build the [monthly / quarterly] review deck in this template, using the numbers from the workbook we were looking at.

Structure it as: one headline slide with the three numbers that decide whether this period was good, then one slide per driver explaining what moved and why, then a risks slide, then a slide of recommendations with owners. Use the layouts and colours already in this deck's slide master rather than inventing styling, and turn any list of more than four bullets into a native chart or diagram instead of text. Keep every slide to one idea, and tell me which claims are not yet supported by data I gave you so I can fill those gaps before I present it.
โœ๏ธ tracked-changes edit that keeps your formatting
Work through this document in tracked changes so I can accept or reject every edit individually.

First, tell me the three things weakening it most as a piece of writing, then make the edits: tighten anything padded, remove passive constructions where the actor matters, and make the structure obvious with the heading styles already in this document rather than new ones. Preserve all existing numbering, cross-references and defined terms exactly. Then work through my open comments one by one, edit the anchored text, and reply in each thread explaining what you changed so my reviewers can follow it.
๐ŸŒฑ The cross-app move. The add-ins share context, so one conversation can span your open workbook, deck and document. That means "pull the variance from the model, build the three slides, then update the commentary in the memo" is a single request rather than three rounds of copy and paste.

How to become the AI person, not the AI enthusiast

Installing an add-in makes you a user. What makes you the person your team routes work through is packaging your process so other people get your output without you in the room.

  1. ๐ŸŽฏ Pick the task your team repeats, not the one you find interesting. The month-end pack, the weekly performance summary, the client update deck. Boring and repeated beats clever and one-off, every time.
  2. ๐Ÿ“„ Turn your process into a skill. A skill is a small folder with a SKILL.md holding a name, a description of when to use it, and your steps. Claude applies enabled skills automatically while you work in the Office add-ins, so your team's format gets followed without anyone re-explaining it. Upload it in Claude at Customize, then Skills, then Add. Custom skills are available on Free through Enterprise (how to create custom skills).
  3. ๐Ÿ“Š Measure the before and after once. Time the task the old way one final time, then time it with this. "Our month-end pack went from six hours to ninety minutes, here is the file" is a promotion conversation. "AI is really useful" is not.
  4. ๐Ÿค Hand it over and stay useful. Give two colleagues the skill and the prompt, and fix what breaks for them. The person who makes the team faster is the one who gets asked into the next decision, which is the whole point of being early.
๐ŸŒฑ turn your repeat task into a team skill
I want to package a task my team repeats into a reusable Claude skill so anyone can produce it to my standard: [describe the task, for example "our monthly performance pack in Excel and the deck that goes with it"].

Interview me first: ask about the inputs, the exact output format, the checks I always run before I send it, the mistakes juniors make on it, and the tone or house style it has to match. Wait for my answers. Then write the complete SKILL.md with a lowercase-hyphenated name, a description under 200 characters that states exactly when to use it, and step-by-step instructions specific enough that someone who has never done this task gets my version of it. Include a final verification step listing what must be checked before it is sent, and tell me how to save it as a zipped folder I can upload.

The limits and the one real risk

๐Ÿ’ก Files from outside your organisation can carry hidden instructions. Anthropic's own documentation warns that downloaded templates, vendor files, counterparty documents and data imports can contain prompt injections designed to make the add-in extract information or modify data. Claude asks you to confirm risky operations, so read those confirmations properly instead of clicking through them, and treat external files with the same caution you would treat an unexpected attachment.
Not for audit-critical work unsigned The docs are explicit: not recommended for final client deliverables or audit-critical calculations without human verification. Review before anything leaves your desk.
Start from a copy Open a duplicate of the workbook before asking for wide edits. Claude warns before overwriting, and a copy means a mistake costs you nothing.
Chat history is local Conversations in the add-ins are stored in your browser rather than synced across devices, so do not expect to pick up yesterday's Excel thread on another machine.
Usage is shared The add-ins draw on your existing Claude account limits, so a heavy modelling session eats the same allowance as your normal chats.
