Build a fitness coach skill in Claude

Hey, it's Cindy ๐ŸŒฑ You commented COACH, so here is the full build: connecting your real health data, the complete skill file you can copy (no code).
btw the waitlist for AI System Club is now open! If you're keen on using AI to automate your content, video editing, job search, business or build AI agents, feel free to sign up (only if you want to hehe). Ps. the waitlist gets first dibs:)
๐Ÿ’ก Read this before anything else. Claude is not a medical device and cannot give you medical guidance. This is a planning and consistency tool, not a diagnosis or a physio. If you are pregnant, returning from injury, managing a heart, joint or metabolic condition, or brand new to lifting, get a qualified professional to sign off on the plan before you follow it. Every prompt below is written so Claude stays inside that lane.
the honest gate

What is actually available, and where

Claude can read your health data directly, but the feature has real limits worth knowing before you start. It is in beta, available on Pro and Max plans, and currently United States only. Claude can read the data, and it cannot write to or modify anything in Apple Health or Health Connect (Claude with iOS apps, Claude with Android apps).

Route A, the live connection Pro or Max, in the US. Claude reads steps, workouts, vitals, sleep, body measurements and nutrition straight from Apple Health or Health Connect when you ask a health question on your phone.
Route B, the export Everyone else, any plan. You export your numbers to a file and hand Claude the file. Slightly more manual, identical coaching, and it works on any country and any device.

step one

Get your real numbers in front of Claude

Route A: connect Apple Health or Health Connect

  1. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Ask a health question first. Open the Claude app on your phone and ask something that needs your data, for example "how did I sleep this week compared to last week". Claude requests health access contextually, so the permission screen appears at the moment it is needed.
  2. โœ… Choose what you share. On the permissions screen, tick only the data types you want it to use. Sleep, steps, workouts, resting heart rate and heart rate variability are the useful ones for training. You do not have to share everything.
  3. โš™๏ธ Know where to change your mind. On iPhone, manage it at Settings, then Health, then Data Access & Devices, then Claude. On Android, Settings, then Apps, then Health Connect, then App permissions, then Claude. Android 14 or later is required.

Route B: export your data instead

  1. ๐Ÿ“ค Use an export app that writes clean files. Health Auto Export (JSON+CSV) pulls metrics out of Apple Health as CSV or JSON. It has a free tier, with the paid tiers adding background sync and automatic delivery to iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Dropbox. Export the last 8 weeks of steps, sleep, workouts and resting heart rate.
  2. ๐Ÿ“Ž Hand Claude the file. Either upload the CSV straight into a chat, or drop it in a Drive folder and connect Google Drive under Customize, then Connectors, so it can read the latest export without you re-uploading each week.
  3. โœ๏ธ No export app? Keep a five-line log. A note with date, hours slept, steps, what you trained and a 1 to 10 energy score is genuinely enough for the coach to adapt. Paste the week in and it works. The data does not need to be fancy, it needs to be real.
๐ŸŒฑ Eight weeks beats yesterday. Whichever route you take, give it history the first time. A plan built off one day of data is a guess, and a plan built off two months of data can see your actual pattern, including the day of the week you always skip.

step two

Write the coach skill (this is the part that makes it stick)

A skill is a small folder with a SKILL.md inside: a name, a description that tells Claude when to use it, and your instructions. You write the rules once and it follows them every single day, instead of you re-explaining your training philosophy every morning. Custom skills work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans (how to create custom skills).

Copy this whole file, change the bracketed parts to your own situation, and save it as SKILL.md.

๐Ÿ“„ SKILL.md, the no-excuses coach
---
name: fitness-coach
description: Plans and adapts my training week from my real health data. Use when I ask for today's session, next week's plan, or a check-in on my training.

# Fitness coach

## Who I am
- Goal: [for example, get stronger and keep 4 sessions a week without burning out]
- Training age: [beginner / a year or two / experienced]
- Available: [for example, 4 days, 45 minutes, gym on weekdays, home on weekends]
- Equipment: [for example, full gym; or dumbbells, bands and a mat]
- Known limits: [for example, cranky right knee, avoid deep lunges]

## How to plan
1. Read my last 7 to 14 days of data before planning anything: sleep, steps, workouts, resting heart rate.
2. Build a week with hard days, easy days and one full rest day. Never schedule two heavy lower-body days back to back.
3. Progress by one variable at a time: either weight, reps or sets, never all three in the same week.
4. Write every session as: warm-up, main work with sets, reps and target effort, finisher, and an estimated total time.
5. Keep sessions inside the time I actually have. A 45-minute plan that fits beats a 90-minute plan I skip.

## How to adapt (the daily rule)
- Under 6 hours of sleep, or resting heart rate more than 7 bpm above my 14-day average: replace the hard session with a walk or easy mobility, and say why in one line.
- Three or more sessions completed in the last 7 days and sleep is normal: add load, one variable only.
- Two or more sessions missed in a row: do not pile on make-up work. Restart with the easiest session in the plan.
- Sore, ill or travelling: offer a 15-minute version rather than cancelling the day.

## Tone
- Direct, warm, no shame, no lectures about discipline.
- One line of reasoning, then the session. I do not want an essay.
- Never diagnose anything, never give medical or nutrition advice beyond general habits, and tell me to see a professional if I describe pain, dizziness or anything that sounds like an injury.

## Weekly review (Sundays)
1. Compare planned sessions with what actually happened.
2. Name the single biggest blocker from the week and change the plan to remove it.
3. Output next week as a day-by-day list with dates, ready to go onto my calendar.
  1. ๐Ÿ“ฆ Package it. Put the SKILL.md inside a folder named fitness-coach, then zip that folder. The zip needs the folder as its root, not the loose file. Keep the name lowercase and hyphenated, and do not put "claude" or "anthropic" in it, or the upload gets rejected.
  2. โž• Upload it. In Claude, open Customize, then Skills, click Add, and upload a skill. Enable it once it appears in the list.
  3. ๐Ÿงช Test the trigger. Start a fresh chat and say "what am I doing today". If it does not reach for the skill on its own, make the description line more specific about when to use it. That description is the trigger, not the file name.
  4. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Prefer not to write it yourself? Paste the prompt below and Claude drafts the skill for you, including the description.
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ have Claude build the skill for you
I want a reusable Claude skill that acts as my fitness coach, planning my training week from my real health data and adapting it daily.

First, interview me: ask about my goal, my training experience, how many days and minutes I actually have, my equipment, my injuries or limits, and the tone I want from a coach. Wait for my answers. Then write the complete SKILL.md, with a lowercase-hyphenated name, a description under 200 characters that says exactly when you should use it, and instructions covering how to plan a week, how to adapt to poor sleep or a raised resting heart rate, how to handle missed sessions, and a Sunday review that outputs next week day by day. Include a rule that you never diagnose anything and always point me to a professional if I describe pain or symptoms. Finish by telling me how to save it as a zipped folder I can upload.

step three

Build the first week from your actual numbers

With the skill installed and your data connected or attached, this is the prompt that produces the plan.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ build my training week
Use my fitness coach skill and build next week's training plan from my real data, not from a template.

Start by telling me what you can actually see in my last two weeks: average sleep, step count, how many sessions I completed, my resting heart rate trend, and any pattern in which days I train and which days I miss. Then build the week day by day with dates, each session written as warm-up, main work with sets, reps and target effort, finisher and total time, staying inside the days and minutes in my skill file. Where my data is thin or missing, say so plainly and tell me what to log this week so next week's plan is better. Finish with the one habit change that would matter more than any exercise in the plan above.
๐Ÿ“Œ Push back on the first plan. If it looks like a generic program, tell it exactly what is off ("I have never squatted, do not start me at 4 sets", "Thursdays are impossible"). Every correction you make here is worth adding to the skill file so you never make it twice.

step four

The daily check that makes it a coach

The plan is not the product. The adaptation is. This is the prompt you run each morning, and it is also the one you will later schedule.

โ˜€๏ธ this morning's session
Use my fitness coach skill and give me today's session, adjusted for how yesterday actually went.

Check yesterday's sleep, steps and any workout, plus my resting heart rate against my 14-day average, then apply the adaptation rules in my skill file. Give me one line of reasoning, then the session itself, then a 15-minute fallback version for if the day falls apart. If the data says I should back off, back me off without negotiating, and if I have been consistent, add load on one variable only and tell me which one changed. Do not comment on my weight, and if anything I have written sounds like pain or illness rather than fatigue, stop and tell me to check with a professional.

step five

Put it on a schedule and onto your calendar

This is what turns a good intention into a system that runs without you remembering it.

  1. ๐Ÿ”Œ Connect your calendar. Open Customize, then Connectors, and connect Google Calendar. Through the Google Workspace connector Claude can view, create, update and delete events, and by default it asks for your approval before each action (Google Workspace connectors).
  2. โฐ Schedule the Sunday planner. On a paid plan, open Scheduled in the Cowork sidebar, choose New task, then Set up manually, and set it to weekly. Paste the Sunday prompt below as the instructions. Scheduled tasks run remotely, so your computer does not need to be on (scheduled tasks in Cowork).
  3. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Keep the daily check on your phone. The live health connection reads from the phone you granted permission on, so the morning check is a 20-second chat in the Claude app rather than a cloud task. If you want the daily run automated too, use Route B and have your export land in a connected Drive folder the scheduled task can read.
  4. โœ… Approve the first calendar write. The first time it creates events, read them before approving. Check the days, times and durations match your real life, then let it run.
๐Ÿ“… the Sunday planner (paste as your scheduled task)
Run my weekly training review and plan the week ahead using my fitness coach skill.

Compare what I planned last week with what I actually completed, name the single biggest blocker in one sentence, and change next week's plan to remove it rather than repeating the same schedule. Then build the new week day by day with dates and times that fit around the events already on my calendar, and create one calendar event per session with the full session in the description so I can read it from my phone at the gym. Do not double-book me, do not schedule a hard session the morning after a late event, and finish by telling me what changed from last week and why.
๐Ÿ’ก One thing to watch. A scheduled task that writes to your calendar every week can quietly pile up duplicate events if the plan changes mid-week. Ask it to update or replace last week's events rather than adding new ones, and check the calendar after the first two runs before you trust it.

make it better

Four upgrades once it is running

Log the subjective stuff Add a one-line note each day for energy, stress and soreness. Watches measure load, not life, and the coach adapts far better when it can see both.
Give it a deload rule Add "every fourth week, cut volume by about 40 percent" to the skill file. Programs fail from accumulating fatigue far more often than from being too easy.
Ask for the why once a week Have it explain the reasoning behind one session each week. You end up understanding your own training instead of following instructions.
Keep a plain-text history Save each week's plan and what you actually did in one file it can read. That file becomes the memory that makes month three noticeably smarter than week one.
