Hey, it's Cindy ๐ฑ You commented "canva", so here is the whole thing: how to turn on the Canva connector inside Claude.
btw the waitlist for AI System Club is now open! If you're keen on using AI to automate your content, video editing, job search, business or build AI agents, feel free to sign up (only if you want to hehe). Ps. the waitlist gets first dibs:)
๐ก Read the plan gates first, they decide what you can do. Connectors themselves work across Claude plans, and Canva's own docs say design generation, editing, search, export and comments work on all Canva plans. Two things are gated on the Canva side: resizing a design needs Canva Pro or above, and autofilling brand templates and brand kits needs Canva Enterprise. Source: Canva MCP documentation. If you are on free Canva, everything in this guide still works, you just resize by duplicating and re-laying out instead of one-click resize.
what you're turning on
What the Canva connector actually does
A connector is a bridge that lets Claude take real actions in another app instead of describing them to you. Once Canva is connected, Claude is not generating a picture of a carousel, it is creating an actual design in your Canva account that opens in your editor with real text boxes you can drag, retype and restyle. Anthropic's own connector page describes it as "search, create, autofill, and export Canva designs from a prompt" (claude.com/connectors/canva).
Create designs Build a new multi-page Canva design from a description, including Instagram post sizes, and it lands in your Canva account.
Search your library Find and summarise designs you already made, so you can say "start from my last carousel" instead of hunting for it.
Autofill templates Drop your content into a branded template or a chart. This one is Canva Enterprise only, so treat it as a nice-to-have.
Export and resize Export finished designs (PNG and other formats) and resize them for other platforms. Resize needs Canva Pro or above.
๐ฑ The connector also ships three ready-made Canva skills you can ask for by name: Branded Presentation (a deck from an outline), Design Translation (translate every text box in a design), and Social Media Resize (one design into multiple social formats). You do not install these separately, they come with the connector.
set it up
Connect Canva inside Claude
๐ง Have both accounts open. You need a Claude account (claude.ai, the desktop app or the mobile app) and a Canva account signed in on the same browser. Being signed into Canva first makes the authorisation step one click instead of a full login detour.
๐ Open Customize, then Connectors. Inside Claude, go to Customize and then Connectors. This is the directory of apps Claude can act inside. Do not go looking under Settings, connectors have their own home under Customize.
๐จ Find Canva and click Connect. Canva sits in the connector directory. Clicking Connect opens a Canva authorisation window that lists what Claude will be allowed to do in your account.
โ Authorise, then land back in Claude. Approve the access request in the Canva window. You will be returned to Claude and Canva now shows as connected. If the window closes without confirming, disable pop-up blocking for claude.ai and try once more.
๐ก Switch it on inside the chat. Connecting the app and using it in a given conversation are two separate things. Open a new chat, open the tools or connectors control for that chat, and make sure Canva is toggled on. This is the step most people miss when Claude says it cannot see their Canva.
๐งช Prove it works before you build. Type "show me my three most recently edited Canva designs". If it lists real designs from your account, the bridge is live. If it describes what it would do instead of listing anything, the connector is not on for that chat, so go back a step.
๐ก Prefer working in Claude Code or another MCP client? Canva also publishes a remote MCP server at https://mcp.canva.com/mcp, which is the same capability wired in manually. The connector route above is the one to use unless you are already living in a terminal. Setup detail: canva.dev/docs/mcp and Anthropic's custom connectors guide.
do this once
Step one, teach it your brand
Skip this and every carousel comes out looking like a stock template, which is the exact problem you were trying to avoid. Paste the block below into the chat before your first build, then save the filled-in version somewhere you can re-paste it (or drop it into your Claude project instructions so it applies to every carousel chat automatically).
๐ฑ my brand profile
Here is my brand profile. Use it for every Canva design you make for me from now on, and do not deviate from it unless I say so.
Colours: [base colour hex], [accent colour hex used for emphasis only], [text colour hex]. Fonts: [heading font] for headings, [body font] for body copy. Tone of voice: [three adjectives, for example warm, direct, practical]. My audience: [who they are and what they are trying to do].
Layout rules: portrait 1080 x 1350 for Instagram, generous margins, one idea per slide, headline at the top, supporting line beneath it, nothing crammed into corners. Never fill a slide edge to edge with text. Accent colour is for one element per slide maximum.
Before you build anything, repeat this profile back to me in three lines so I can confirm you have it right.
the main event
The prompt that builds the carousel
This is the one that does the work. It asks for the writing and the build in a single pass, but it forces the outline past you first, because approving an outline takes ten seconds and rebuilding five bad slides takes twenty minutes.
๐จ build my 5 slide carousel
Build me a 5 slide Instagram carousel in Canva on this topic: [your topic]. My audience is [audience] and the one thing I want them to walk away with is [the single takeaway].
Structure it like this: slide 1 is the cover and carries the whole promise in under 8 words, slides 2 to 4 each make one point and only one point, and slide 5 tells them exactly what to do next. Write like a person talking, short sentences, no buzzwords, no em dashes, sentence case only. Cap each slide at roughly 25 words of body copy.
First, show me just the slide-by-slide text as an outline and wait for my approval. Once I say go, create it as a real editable Canva design at 1080 x 1350 portrait using my brand profile, then give me the link to open it in Canva.
๐ง Why the outline gate matters: the text is the part that decides whether the post works, and it is far cheaper to fix in a chat message than inside a built design. Approve the words, then let it build.
then fix it
Two prompts for the second pass
Your first build will be about eighty percent right. These two prompts close the gap without you opening a single text box.
โ๏ธ tighten the copy
Open the carousel you just made and rewrite it tighter, editing the design in place rather than creating a new one.
Cut every slide's body copy by about a third without losing meaning, and make sure no two slides open with the same sentence shape. Give me three alternative cover headlines: one that promises a specific outcome, one that names the mistake people are making, and one that is a plain how-to. Rank them by which would stop a scroll and explain your ranking in one line each.
Then apply the winning headline to slide 1 and leave the rest of the design untouched.
๐ค export and repurpose
I am happy with this carousel. Export it as PNG files at the highest quality available and give me the download links, named slide-1 through slide-5 so they stay in order when I upload them.
Then write me an Instagram caption for it: first letter lowercase, normal sentence case after that, two or three emojis, no fearmongering and no em dashes. It should give a genuine reason to save the post rather than just repeating the cover slide.
Finally, list the two or three slides that would work as a standalone single image post, and say why each one stands alone.
๐ก On resizing. If you ask for the same carousel as a LinkedIn or Pinterest size, that is Canva's resize feature and it needs Canva Pro or above. On free Canva, ask Claude to create a fresh design at the new dimensions with the same copy instead. Slower by a minute, same result, no upgrade required.
make it look designed
Four rules that separate good carousels from generated ones
The cover is the whole post Most people never swipe. If slide 1 does not promise something specific, the other four slides do not exist. Rewrite the cover more times than anything else.
One idea per slide, ruthlessly Two ideas on a slide means neither lands. If a slide needs a comma-heavy second sentence to make sense, it is two slides.
Whitespace is the design The fastest way to make an AI-built slide look intentional is to delete words. Aim for a headline plus one supporting line, not a paragraph.
Your accent colour is a spotlight One highlighted element per slide, maximum. When everything is emphasised, the eye has nowhere to land and it reads as noise.
๐ฉโ๐ป Do the last five percent yourself. Open the design in Canva and nudge the things only a human notices: a headline that breaks awkwardly across two lines, an icon sitting slightly off-centre, one slide with tighter margins than the others. That pass takes two minutes and it is the difference between "made with AI" and "made by someone with taste".
when it misbehaves
Fixing the four things that go wrong
๐ "I can't access your Canva." The connector is on for your account but off for this chat. Open the chat's tools or connectors control and toggle Canva on, then repeat your request. This is by far the most common cause.
๐ผ๏ธ It gave you an image, not a design. You asked for a carousel without saying where it should live. Say "create this as an editable Canva design in my account and give me the link", and it will build rather than draw.
๐จ The colours drifted off brand. Re-paste your brand profile in the same chat and add "restyle the existing design to match, do not create a new one". Long conversations dilute early instructions, so re-anchoring is normal, not a failure.
๐ The text overflows its boxes. Your copy is too long for the layout. Ask for a hard cap: "no slide may exceed 25 words of body copy, rewrite anything that does and reflow the design". Fix it in the copy, not by shrinking the font.
the honest bit
What this does not do
It does not replace your judgement about what is worth posting. It removes the mechanical part, the part where you already know your five slides and still spend forty minutes shuffling text boxes. Expect a solid, on-brand starting design and a short human pass at the end, not a finished post you never look at. That is still the difference between a carousel a week and a carousel a day.
