Build a Canva carousel template with Claude

Hey, it's Cindy ๐ŸŒฑ You know that saved folder full of carousels you love and never rebuild? This is how you hand that exact folder to Claude and get back an editable Canva template.

two pieces

What you are actually building

A reusable Canva carousel template that Claude drafts from your own saved posts, then hands off to Canva as a real editable file. Two pieces make it work:

๐Ÿ”Œ The Canva connector links Claude to your Canva account so it can create, autofill, resize, and export real designs from a normal chat, not just describe them. It is a first-party Canva integration in Claude's connector directory (claude.com/connectors/canva).
๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Canva in Claude Design is the newer surface Anthropic and Canva launched at Canva Create 2026, where an idea you draft with Claude becomes a fully editable, structured Canva design instead of a locked export (Canva newsroom).

one-time setup

Step 1: connect Canva to Claude

The connector is what gives Claude access to your Canva account, so set this up once.

  1. ๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ Open Settings in Claude (claude.ai, desktop, or mobile), then click Connectors.
  2. ๐Ÿ”Ž Click Browse connectors and search Canva (it is usually the first result).
  3. โœ… Click Connect, sign in to your Canva account in the browser window that opens, and approve the design, edit, and export permissions.
  4. ๐Ÿ” Back in a new chat, open the connector/settings icon and make sure Canva is toggled on for that conversation.
Heads-up: the exact menu labels shift as Claude updates its UI. Some older tutorials say "customize > skills", but the current path is Settings > Connectors > Browse connectors. If you cannot find it, the live steps are on Canva's help page (canva.com/help/mcp-agent-setup).

show, don't describe

Step 2: gather your mood board

This is the move most people skip. Instead of describing a look, you show one.

  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Screenshot 3 to 6 carousels you actually love (yours or saved inspo). Full carousels, not single slides, so Claude sees how a cover, body slides, and a CTA slide relate.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Keep them in one folder so you can drag them all in at once as reference images.
  • ๐ŸŽฏ Pick posts that share a vibe (similar fonts, spacing, color energy). A messy mood board gives a messy template.

copy this

Step 3: prompt Claude to build the template

Start a chat with the Canva connector on and paste a version of this. Spelling out each slide's job is what separates a usable template from a random graphic.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Attach your screenshots with this
Canva: build me a reusable 6-slide Instagram carousel TEMPLATE, 1080x1350, based on the reference screenshots I'm attaching as a mood board.

Match the overall look of the references: font pairing, spacing, and color energy. My brand colors are cream #FAF7F2 with a warm orange accent #D97757.

Slide roles: slide 1 = bold cover headline, slides 2-5 = one key point each with a short supporting line, slide 6 = a closing CTA slide.

Before you design, ask me any clarifying questions about tone, audience, or layout. Then produce it as an editable Canva design I can open and change, not a flat export.
Why the "ask me questions first" line matters: Claude tends to ask clarifying questions before it commits, so it designs to your intent instead of guessing. Answer them, wait a few minutes, and you get a first draft.

make it yours

Step 4: open it in Canva and make it yours

  • ๐Ÿ“ค The design lands as a real Canva file, so click through to open it in Canva's editor.
  • โœ๏ธ Now the colors, fonts, text, and layout are all editable. It is a starting template, not a locked image.
  • ๐Ÿ”„ To reuse it, duplicate the design in Canva each time you make a new carousel, or save it as a Brand Template if you are on a Canva plan that supports them.

go further

3 bonus prompts to run next

Same goal, different angles, all genuinely useful.

  • ๐ŸŽจ Turn it into a fill-in system: "Take this carousel template and add clear placeholder text on every slide (like [HOOK], [POINT 1], [SUPPORTING LINE]) so I can swap copy fast next time."
  • ๐Ÿ” Resize for every platform: "Resize this carousel into a LinkedIn 1080x1080 version and a 1080x1920 story version, keeping the same fonts and colors."
  • โœ๏ธ Fill it with real content: "Autofill this template with a carousel about [your topic]. Keep my slide structure, write punchy on-brand copy, and flag any slide where the text is too long for the space."

use it well

How to get the most out of it

๐ŸŒฑ If you are new start with just 3 reference screenshots and one topic. Let Claude ask its questions and actually answer them properly, that single habit is what makes the output feel designed instead of generic.
โšก If you are a power user feed it your Brand Kit so the very first draft uses your real colors, fonts, and voice (Claude + Canva connector), then keep one master template and only ever autofill it, so your feed stays visually consistent.

what to watch

The honest bit

๐Ÿšง The first draft will not be perfect, and it is not meant to be. Treat it as a 70% starting point you finish by hand in Canva.
๐Ÿ”’ The connector only works inside a chat you start. It will not run on a schedule or generate posts on its own (what it can and can't do).
๐Ÿ“ Complex layouts (tight text on busy backgrounds, precise alignment) are still faster to nudge manually than to re-prompt. Use Claude for the structure and vibe, your eyes for the polish.
