The 5 AI work archetypes that are replacing job titles
Hey, it's Cindy 🌱 There are five AI work archetypes. Here they are in the order a product actually gets built.

Where this comes from. Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code at Anthropic, noticed that everyone on his team is really one of five types, and it has nothing to do with anyone's degree. It lands harder when you know that everyone at Anthropic shares the same title, "Member of Technical Staff", so the archetype is the real signal, not the label. Sources: Boris Cherny on X and Inc.
the 5 types
The 5 archetypes, in build order
A product moves through these five roles in order. Read them as a sequence, and notice which one you keep gravitating to, because that is your clue.
🧪 The prototyper. Tests brand-new ideas fast and is happy to throw most of them away. You might be this if you love the messy first version and get bored once it works. Stack on top: rapid AI prototyping, so you can spin up a rough build in an afternoon instead of a fortnight.
🔨 The builder. Takes a scrappy idea and ships it for real, solid enough for other people to rely on. You might be this if "make it actually work" is your favourite phrase. Stack on top: AI-assisted building so you ship more, faster, without a bigger team.
🧹 The sweeper. Cleans up the mess so the thing does not quietly collapse: the bugs, the edge cases, the debt everyone else skipped. You might be this if you cannot leave a loose end alone. Stack on top: using AI to audit, test, and refactor at a scale a human never could.
🌱 The grower. Takes a working product and pushes it toward product-market fit: the users, the messaging, the loops that make it spread. You might be this if you think about who it is for as much as what it does. Stack on top: AI for content, ads, and analysis, so one person runs the growth of a whole team.
🛡️ The maintainer. Keeps the whole thing alive once it matters: reliability, support, the unglamorous work that earns trust. You might be this if you take real pride in "it just works". Stack on top: AI monitoring and support systems that catch problems before customers do.

How to tell which one you are
Your job title probably hides your real archetype. Let Claude read your actual history and tell you straight:
🔎 find your archetype
Here is what my last few years of work actually looked like: [paste your roles, the projects you are proud of, and the parts you genuinely enjoyed most]. Based on these five archetypes from the person who built Claude Code, prototyper, builder, sweeper, grower, and maintainer, tell me which one I most naturally am and why, using specific evidence from what I pasted.
If I am a blend, name my primary and secondary. And be honest if my current job title is hiding what I am actually good at, because that gap is useful to know.
then go deep
Stack AI on top and become impossible to replace
Pick your one archetype, go deep, and layer AI skills on top of it. The person who is best at their type and fluent in AI beats a generalist every time: a marketer who can build beats a marketer who cannot. And that intersection pays. AI-skilled roles now carry a 62% wage premium, per the PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer.
🗺️ build your 30-day plan
I am a [your archetype] and I want to stack AI skills on top so I am harder to replace. Build me a focused 30-day plan that deepens my core strength and layers in the specific AI skills that archetype needs, with a concrete action for each week and one free resource to learn from.
Then design a small, real project I can finish and show at the end. Keep it realistic for someone with a full-time job, and tell me clearly what to skip so I do not spread myself thin.
You do not have to be all five, and trying to be is the trap. One archetype, done deeply, with AI stacked on top, is what makes you the person a team cannot swap out.
