The AI-era marketing moat audit

Hey, it's Cindy 🌱 This audit helps you find what a competitor can't copy about your marketing, and how to build more of it.

The proof in the reel

OpenAI is advertising a San Francisco Product Marketing Lead role at US$374,000 to US$415,000 base salary plus equity. It is a senior role requiring more than 12 years of experience, not a claim that every marketer earns that amount.

Higgsfield’s current Creator Partnership Program is one first-party example of an AI company deliberately investing in creator distribution:

These examples are signals, not proof that marketing spend alone creates growth.

The three-asset moat

1. Distribution

Distribution is a repeatable route to the right people.

Audit:

  • Which audience can you reach without paying from zero each time?
  • Which channel gives you direct access rather than rented reach?
  • Which partner or community already trusts the problem you solve?
  • What percentage of demand depends on one platform?
  • Can you contact the audience if the algorithm changes tomorrow?

List every channel:

Channel Audience Owned or rented Monthly reach Conversion evidence Platform risk
Email Owned Low
Instagram Rented High
Search Rented discovery Medium
Community
Partnerships

Your first improvement is usually the high-fit channel with evidence, not another new account.

2. Trust

Trust is the proof that the product works for a specific person under a specific condition.

Inventory:

  • customer result with baseline and timeframe
  • working demo
  • before and after artifact
  • public build log
  • testimonial with permission
  • transparent limitation
  • source behind a factual claim
  • documented support response

Score each proof asset:

Proof Specific Verifiable Relevant to buyer Permission clear Current
/5 /5 /5 /5 /5

A polished claim is not proof. A screenshot without context is not proof. The strongest assets show what changed, for whom, under what conditions.

3. Point of view

Point of view is a decision you make differently and can defend.

Use:

Common advice in my category:
[PASTE]

What I have observed:
[REAL EVIDENCE]

Where the advice breaks:
[SPECIFIC CUSTOMER, WORKFLOW, OR CONSTRAINT]

The choice I make instead:
[DECISION]

The cost of that choice:
[HONEST TRADE-OFF]

Turn this into:
1. One plain thesis
2. One demonstration
3. One comparison table
4. One customer-facing explanation

Do not invent evidence or make the disagreement more dramatic than it is.

The competitor sameness test

Choose five competitors. Hide the logo and ask:

Write the three phrases everybody uses. Remove them from your first screen unless you can attach a specific proof.

Channel-risk score

For every channel, score 1 to 5:

Do not abandon high-reach rented channels. Pair them with an owned next step such as email, community, or customer data you have permission to use.

The 30-day experiment

Choose one hypothesis:

If we publish [specific proof or point of view]
to [specific audience]
through [one channel]
then [measurable behaviour] should change
because [mechanism].

Track:

At day 30, keep, change, or stop the experiment. Do not call awareness a moat until it repeatedly reaches the right person.

The honest conclusion

Good products still matter. Distribution cannot rescue something that fails the customer. But when a feature is easier to copy, attention, trust, and a defensible point of view become more valuable.
