The 5 AI-era roles: designer, engineer, and manager are turning into

Hey, it's Cindy 🌱 Below are the 5 roles, where they come from, and the Claude workflow that pairs with each.

where this comes from

Not my idea, the source is solid

This comes from Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code, reflecting on how engineering, product, design, and data roles are melting into a new kind of role on his own team. His original post is here on X (a readable write-up is here). His key point: these aren't tied to your degree or job title. A designer, an engineer, and a PM can all be the same archetype, and most people are a blend of two.

the five

The 5 roles, and your Claude move for each

  1. 💡 1. The Prototyper Comes up with brand new ideas and churns out many of them, most of which won't ship. Speed and volume over polish. Your Claude move: open Claude and use Artifacts to spin up 5 to 10 rough concept variations in an afternoon, then keep the one that has legs.
  2. 🔨 2. The Builder Takes one promising idea and turns it into a real, production-grade product fast. Your Claude move: hand that idea to Claude Code and build it into a working app or tool, step by step, until it actually runs.
  3. 🧹 3. The Sweeper Cleans up the interface, simplifies the code and the system, cuts what's confusing, removes what nobody uses, and makes the whole thing faster. Your Claude move: paste a messy doc, flow, or file into Claude and ask it to simplify, tighten, and cut anything that isn't earning its place.
  4. 📈 4. The Grower Takes something that's already built and iterates on it to improve product-market fit, so people actually love it. Your Claude move: feed Claude your usage numbers or feedback and ask what to change next to lift retention or engagement.
  5. 🛠️ 5. The Maintainer Owns a mature system and keeps it secure, reliable, fast, and efficient as more people pile in. Your Claude move: use Claude to document how a system works, write the checks that catch problems early, and keep it steady as it scales.

where you fit

Different stages need different people

Cherny's other useful point: which roles a team needs depends on how far along the product is. Handy for knowing where you're most valuable right now.

Early, pre product-market fit Leans on Prototypers, Builders, and Sweepers, the people who invent, ship, and simplify fast.
Mature, already scaling Leans on Sweepers, Growers, and Maintainers, the people who refine, grow, and keep it running.

Which one are you? Ask Claude

Don't overthink it. Paste this into Claude and let it read your actual instincts back to you:

🧭 find my archetype
I want to figure out which of these 5 work archetypes fits me best: Prototyper (invents many rough ideas), Builder (turns one idea into a real product fast), Sweeper (simplifies and cuts what's confusing), Grower (improves something built so people love it), Maintainer (keeps a mature system reliable as it scales).

Here's how I actually work:
- The tasks I lose track of time doing: [fill in]
- The tasks I avoid or find draining: [fill in]
- A recent thing I'm proud of and what my part in it was: [fill in]

Tell me my primary archetype and my likely secondary one, why, and 3 concrete ways I could get seriously good at my primary one over the next month, including one thing to practice with Claude.
You're allowed to be more than one, most people span two, sometimes three. None of this is about your degree or your title. Pick the lane you're naturally best at, then get seriously good at it.
